Last of Angola

Well we are home now and I am sending a few videos that I could not download while traveling. I hope you enjoy them.

A special elephant encounter near a camp site.
We experienced most unusual storms while in Angola. On the way to a planned camp site we encountered this wash out and had to completely change our plans. We ended up in the dunes and at Isle dos Tigries. Don’t know what we missed, but we really enjoyed what we did as you can see here and in the last post.

Landing at Tigries, the abandoned town on an island in Angola.

The fort was originally used in the slave trade. Thousands of Angolans were captured, enslaved and sent to Salvador, Brazil. Later, the fort was used during a civil war from 1975-2002. The building contains walls of beautiful Portuguese blue and white tiles.

One section depicted the baptism of the indiginous Queen from 1643-1678, Ngingr Mbandi. When baptized, she took the name Anna de Sousa. She died at the age of 82. Being half Portuguese, I felt a connectedness with Anna. My father’s sister had the last name Sousa too.

Our first two weeks in Uganda and the next two in Namibia and Angola provided us with incredible adventures and photos. I can only hope our blog provided you with some sense of our experience.

Until we meet again, we wish you good health and adventures to keep you enjoying life.

With love,

Julia and Mark
